I am using Tixon template. I attempted to make a minor change in template.css. The change was then applied, but like two days after, it restored to as what it was before. Why and how to fix it?

Hello,
Do you mind specifying the changes you were trying to make? This change could be one that can be made through the Joomla administrator in your template manager, so when you do a save in your template manager it again overwrites the values in template.css. This usually happens for template color values.
Try to do the same change from your administrator template styles settings by changing the values.

The other option is to include the "!important" after your CSS values for example " .YourClass{background-color: #00000 !Important; }" this will emphasize the importance of your style so it won't be overwritten. I would advise you write this code in the custom CSS code section of your template styles still in Joomla administrator.
Let me know if this helps, hear from you soon.

I downloaded template.css to the local computer and made changes relating to margin value of social icons. Then I saved my changes and uploaded the file into server

Yes, that was what I did. I used either DreamWeaver to make changes or Notepad++, it did change to what I wanted for a short time, then it had become the previous state after a few days.
The change I made was tiny, like I changed margin value by default 5px to 10px, that was it!

What if I wanted to adjust a default value? Do I have to copy the whole class to custom CSS field?

Perfect, I agree with Paul, That's the place you can put your extra custom CSS code. you may need to append the "!important" declaration as shown above to save your styles from being overridden by any other CSS code.

Custom CSS - means that you can use:
a) Your own classes
b) Override ours
---
It's much safer method than edit template core files.

Good to hear, try to do a save in your template layout settings. If the changes are not overwritten then you are good to go.

custom.css or content inside Custom CSS field is not override by template save nor update, so it's 100% safe method.

So if I need to change something inside default code (which is, the values in default) I will need to rewrite that css to custom.css or content inside custom css field right?
